If we talk about the origin and cultural background, then Manga refers to Japanese comics or graphic novels, which have a long history dating back to the early 20th century. They are a staple of Japanese pop culture, with a broad range of genres, including action, romance, horror, and more. Manga has a strong connection to traditional Japanese culture, which is reflected in its art style and themes.
Whereas, on the other hand, Webtoons originated in South Korea and are typically digital-first comics designed for online consumption.
These are the typical mobile-friendly comics.
The term “Webtoon” comes from a combination of “web” (internet) and “cartoon.” Although Webtoons are often associated with South Korea, they have gained global popularity with many hosting comics from various countries.
The format and layout is also a bit different, with Manga being traditionally printed in black and white and read from right to left (top to bottom), which is the opposite direction to English-language comics. Whereas, the Orientation of Webtoons are specifically designed for vertical scrolling and are read top to bottom, making them more suited for smartphones and other mobile devices. They are more modern, colorful, and less detailed art style than Manga.
Webtoons are often more accessible to international audiences. Whereas, Manga is typically more localized in Japan, which provides a traditional feel.
